Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) in cats and what you should know

URI is a common illness in cats and is similar to the human “cold”. It is highly contagious by different viruses or bacteria and resides in the upper airways of the nose, throat, and sinuses.

Common symptoms of URI in cats are sneezing, runny nose, congestion, clear to colored nasal and eye discharge, loss of appetite, and lethargy.

Because the virus is airborne, the likelihood of contracting the virus is greater when the concentration of cats is greater–pet shows, pet shops, animal shelters, veterinarian offices, as well as boarding facilities. However, the more often a cat is boarded the greater the chances of acquiring immunity to the illness. An exposure that causes minor infections might leave a cat protected for life against that strain of URI.

The feline distemper vaccine protects against the common varieties of URI but, as with a common cold, there are hundreds of strains. Mutations of the virus constantly occur as they adapt to the environment. Therefore, it is impossible to vaccinate against every form of this virus.

How is URI handled?

The Cat’s Pajamas maintains a high standard of sanitation and cleanliness in its daily routine and throughout the day. Personal care and attention is given to every cat. We require vaccination records and refuse admittance of an obviously sick cat. Should a cat show symptoms of URI while in our care it is promptly segregated and given personal appropriate and medical attention.

Vaccinations

All cats must be current with rabies and distemper vaccines and documentation for these vaccinations, as well as spay/neuter status, must be provided prior to boarding.   Most vaccination records include spay or neuter status.  These records can be emailed to cats.pajamas.mi@gmail.com directly from your veterinarian, or a photo taken of the document can be sent via text to 607-592-8525.

Fleas

Please check your cat for fleas prior to arrival. If there is any evidence of fleas, a cat will be treated accordingly with Frontline and an extra fee of $30 will incur.
